Animal Stories - Western Mastiff Bat : A Western Mastiff Bat (Eumops Perotis) was brought into WildCare. It was found grounded during the day and being attacked by crows. The bat had bruising and superficial wounds to her wings and tail. There was a tear in the right wing between the 4th and 5th digits. She was cold, thin, and dehydrated. After she was medically stabilized she then went into foster care with Kim Sandholdt. Eumops, as they are called, are not known to inhabit the San Francisco Bay Area. They are the largest native bat in the United States. They can fly 50-60 mph; they primarily eat moths on the wing; they do not hibernate, although when temperatures drop they will stay in the roost and go into torpor. They prefer exfoliating granite and typically their roosts provide a clean drop of several meters to allow them to gain momentum to launch into flight. They have a wing span of 22”. After 7 months of rehabilitation in foster care with Kim, the bat was successfully released by Kim, Cindy Dicke and a team of bat biologists in area with population of Eumops. how do you apologize? : The photographs are of animals found dead; the majority is of road-killed animals that I encountered on a two-mile stretch of road near where I use to live. The catalyst for this work came from a couple of things. One is my ongoing interest in how animals are thought about, how animals are looked at, and how we co-exist with animals. Another is reading a Barry Lopez essay called Apologia. In this essay Lopez explored the moral and emotional upheaval he experienced during a cross-country road trip where he frequently stopped and removed road-killed animals from the roadways. The thing that struck a cord within me in his essay was his telling of a man asking him "Why do you bother?” And his response was "You never know. The ones you give some semblance of burial, to which you offer an apology, may have been like seers in a parallel culture. It is an act of respect, a technique of awareness.” So these photographs represent my technique of awareness, a gesture of respect toward the animals I encountered on the roads. Instead of averting my eyes in sadness or indifference I found that I wanted to look closer. I wanted to focus my attention toward the animals. I photographed them, not so much as a document of their passing but more as an acknowledgment of their existence, an acknowledgment that the lives and the remains of animals are very much a part of our landscape, a part of our day to day world. My perception of animals as beautiful and worthy is central to my aesthetic concerns in this particular body of work. What I was trying for in these pictures was a combination of beauty, sadness and a sense of reverence. To paraphrase Aldo Leopold… There are some who can live without wild things and there are some who cannot. These photographs represent the dilemmas of one who cannot.

Yellowstone II : May 19 - 30, 2011 The abundance of wildlife in the Yellowstone ecosystem is truly spectacular. It is the perfect place to experience wildlife and wild country. A chance at seeing a grizzly sow with her cub riding on her back across a snowy field is just one of the reasons I go in early May. I leave as always giving thanks to the animals I encounter, especially the bears for their tolerance and good judgement in allowing me to walk away from the experience.

Fawns (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) : These photographs are of Blacktail deer fawns that were brought into Wildcare-a hospital that treats injured wildlife with the goal to released back to wild. The surviving fawns were brought to the recovery site for rehabilitation and foster care until their release back to the wild. I photographed the fawns once a week from May 08 to September 08. Some of the photographs are of fawns inside the clinic and most are from the vantage point of sitting on the ground under a tree or near cover and photographing their interactions and behavior within their small herd. My interest in photographing the fawns is to bring awareness to fawn rehabilitation and "living with deer" in urban areas. Here are the reasons these particular fawns were brought in: #0240 - female - 03.16.08 - was found near dead doe who died giving birth with twin breached - released 09.14.08. #0395 - male - 04.17.08 - was found in a storm drain near trail head by hiker - released 09.14.08. #0515 - female - 04.29.08 - found in yard trying to nurse from a dog - released 09.20.08. #0575 - female - 05.07.08 - found in residential construction site - died in foster care. #0609 - 2 males - 05.12.08 - the does was hit by car, twin fawns found nearby - both released 9.14.08. #0616 - male - 05.22.08 - found near parking structure, had broken pelvis, cracked femur - released 09.20.08. #0719 - 2 males - twin fawns found, no doe in sight, thought abandoned - both released 09.14.08. #0821 - female - the doe was hit by car, fawn found near by - released 09.20.08. #0977 - male - the doe was hit by car near construction site, fawn found in the construction site - died in foster care. #0998 - female - chased by dog and was caught under a fence - died in foster care.
